Thematic Seminar and a workshop series on "Fundamental Archives Theories and Practices"

The Hong Kong Archives Society (HKAS) is pleased to announce our Professional Training 2026 series, featuring a Thematic Seminar and a workshop series on “Fundamental Archives Theories and Practices”. Taking place from May to July and aiming to enhance participants’ understanding and expertise in the field of records and archives management, these programs welcome those who are or  interested in archival work, or planning to set up archives. 

The training series consists of two components. Details are as follows:

Thematic Seminar

Theme : Professional Archival Education is a MUST, not an OPTION

Content : An analysis of the importance and value of “Archives” as one of the three major resources of an organization, and the significance of archival management and its related education.

Workshop: “Foundations of Archival Theory and Practice”

Content : to provide some basic hands-on training to those who are interested in or responsible for setting up archives for their institutions. The seminar will cover the following topics:

1. Fundamentals of records and archives
2. Archival Appraisal and Accession
3. Archival Arrangement
4. Archival Description
5. Setting up an Archives

Dates :June 20, 27 and July 4, 11, 18, 2026 (Saturdays, 5 sessions in total)
Time : 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM
Venue : Saint Francis University, 2 Chui Ling Lane, Tseung Kwan O, N.T.
Language : Conducted in Cantonese (Presentation materials and handouts in English)
Fee : HK$1,250 (Members) / HK$1,500 (Non-members)

Presenter:
Mr. Simon F.K. Chu
Former Government Records Service Director of the HKSAR; former Advisor to the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme and  China’s National Committee for Documentary Heritage; Advisor to the East Asian Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (ICA); Honorary Associate Professor of HKU SPACE.   

Mr Chu is a renowned professional archivist and educator. He was former President of the Hong Kong Archives Society, and receiver of the Emmett Leahy Award and the ICA Fellow Award in 2019, the first Asian to receive these two top honours in the archives and records management profession.

Important Notes:

1. Refund Policy: Registration fees are non-refundable unless the Society cancels the workshop due to: 1) Insufficient enrollment; or 2) Unforeseen circumstances preventing the speaker from attending or accessing the venue.

2. Institution Members: quota registered under a Institution Membership may be transferred to another individual within the same organization, provided the Society is notified before the session.
