The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library invites applications for the position of Librarian (Archives and Special Collections) to join our University Archives & Special Collections team, with a primary focus on managing and advancing our Special Collections.

Our Special Collections preserves a rich array of primary source materials—including antique maps, rare books, modern photographs, and historical archives—concentrating on China and its neighbouring regions.  Notably, our signature collection of antique maps, featuring both Chinese and European cartographic traditions, is recognized as one of the most sophisticated in East Asia.

Reporting to the Head of Collection Development, the appointee will undertake a wide range of duties, including collection management, preservation and digitization, exhibition planning, outreach and promotion, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, and general office administration. The appointee will work closely with the other librarian in the team and is expected to participate in library-wide projects.

Candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Library Science (or equivalent). An advanced degree in Art History, China Studies or a related discipline will be an advantage.
  • Two years of post-qualification experience at a professional level, preferably in an academic library or cultural heritage setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Chinese.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

(Duration: 2 years, renewable)

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.  A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
