HKAS Seminar Series 2023

The Hong Kong Archives Society plans to organize a series of seminars for its members and the general public who are interested in knowing more about different aspects of archival management and hear from experienced professionals in the field.

Our goals are to promote:

  • Cultural knowledge keeping

  • Appropriate organization of knowledge records

  • Effective access to knowledge records

  • Dissemination and preservation of intangible heritage


Following the first Seminar “Overview on Archival Management” in April, the second Seminar will be presented in July/August.



Title: Developing a records appraisal strategy for your workplace


Objective(s) & summary:

The workshop is specifically designed to enhance the participants’ practical knowledge in records appraisal in a pragmatic manner. Cases studies from school, fashion, business archives and museum archives will be used to discuss the considerations and challenges that are frequently encountered in the process of records appraisal. During the workshop, discussion and exercises will be carried out with the aim to consolidate the competences acquired during the workshop.


Course modules:  (3 x 2-hour sessions)

Session 1:  Records appraisal

 

- Appraisal for managing records (ISO/TR21946)

- Case study 1: school archives 

- Case study 2: fashion archive 

- Exercise and discussion

 

Session 2:  Records scheduling

 

- Types of records schedules

- Develop a records schedule for your workplace

- Case study 3: archives in museum

- Case study 4: business archives

- Exercise and discussion 

 

 

Session 3:  Presentation and wrap up

 

- Each participant will present his/her own case. Feedback will be given by the speaker and participants

- Wrap up

- What's next

 

 


Upon completion, participants will be able to:

 

 

* gain a better understanding of the key considerations involved in the process of records appraisal across different contexts; and

 

 

* develop records appraisal strategies for your workplace. 

 


Who should attend: Those who are currently working in archives/library/museum with practical operational need.


What should you already know: Have basic knowledge on records appraisal or possess relevant experience in the related sector.


Presenter : Ms Jessica LAU (BA, MLib, PgD, M.S.Sc., CA, SAA(DAS))

Ms Jessica Lau is an experienced Certified Archivist. With Master degrees and Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship, Corporate Communication and Archives and Records Management, etc. she has almost 30 years of work experience in the Archives and Library sectors. She has been engaged in different aspects of archives management, including advocacy programme, collection management and development, research and access, library information management, and training, etc.

* Dates and times: 2.30 pm – 4.30 pm on 22 July, 29 July and 12 August

 

* Venue: Hong Kong Baptist University Library (34 Renfrew Road, Kowloon Tong)

Language: Cantonese with handouts in English

 

* Fee:

HK$480 for members; HK$600 for non-members (non-members can opt to join the Society when registering. See membership benefits here). Fees cover handouts for the participants and certificates of attendance if required

 

* Medium of conduction: Cantonese, supplemented with English teaching materials
