HKAS Professional Development Program 2024

The Hong Kong Archives Society will present a professional development program in 2024 for its members and the general public interested in learning more about archival management. Experienced professionals in the field will conduct seminars and workshops in classroom settings and share sessions online and in person.

Our goals are to promote:

  • Cultural heritage keeping

  • Appropriate organisation of archival records

  • Effective access to archives

  • Dissemination and preservation of documentary heritage


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2024 #2 :

Fundamental Archives Theories and Practices

The workshop is open to all who are interested in archival work, the primary objective is to provide some basic hands-on training to those who are interested in or responsible for setting up an archives for their institutions. The seminar will cover the following topics:

 

  1. Fundamentals of records and archives

  2. Archival Appraisal and Accession

  3. Archival Arrangement

  4. Archival Description

  5. Setting up an Archives

  6. Legal issues for Archives

Simon F.K. Chu

(Presenter of sessions 1-5)

Former Government Records Service Director of the HKSAR; former Advisor to the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme, Advisor to the East Asian Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (ICA) and China’s National Committee for Documentary Heritage; Adjunct Associate Professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Honorary Associate Professor of HKU SPACE.   

Mr Chu is a renowned professional archivist and educator. He was former President of the Hong Kong Archives Society, and receiver of the Emmett Leahy Award and the ICA Fellow Award in 2019, the first Asian to receive these two top honours in the archives and records management profession. 

 

Ms Sarah CHOY

(Presenter of last, i.e. the 6th session)

Ms Choy, Chief Archivist and founder of the Legislative Council Archives, was Advisor to the UNESCO Memory of the World Program for Asia and the Pacific Region and China’s National Committee for the Documentary Heritage Program; current Executive Member of the Expert Group on Legal Matters of the International Council on Archives (ICA); and Trustee of ICA’s Fund for International Development of Archives (FIDA) 

Ms Choy is a Certified Archivist and trained in law. She has been teaching records related legal issues for various post graduate program in archival studies.


Course details

  • 10 am – 12:30 pm on May 11, 18 and 25, June 1, 22 and 29 (6 sessions)

  • Face to Face:  Multipurpose Room, Hong Kong Baptist University Library (will conduct in Cantonese with handouts in English)

  • HKD 1,250 for members; HKD 1,500 for non-members

  • Deadline for registration: 5 pm on May 2 (Thursday)

Please note:

  • Fees are non-refundable unless the Society cancels the seminar due to 1) insufficient numbers of participants; or 2) unavailability of presenter or venue due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the Society’s control

  • For institutional members, registration can be transferred to members of the registrant's colleagues of the same attached/ affiliated institution with prior notice to the Society via email at pd@archives.org.hk
