Fellow members and archivists,

Archival work helps us preserve precious documents, electronic files, records, and various other items of historical value. Archives serves as an avenue to our past. It preserves for us a legacy where we can go into past and find out various aspects of our society, particularly about the government. Unlike many other countries, Hong Kong does not have an archives law by which government records, documents, and various correspondence items are mandated to be preserved. The value of an archives law lies in the preservation and transmission of records for us and future generations; it also contributes to the accountability of the government and helps establish a more open society. There is a need to create a greater awareness of this issue. You are welcome to share your views with us.

I am privileged to be working with the members of the standing committee of the society. I have learned much from them. In August and Sept of 2005, the Society conducted four classes for librarians to learn more about the archival world. Starting in Sept, we would work with SPACE to have another course on archival administration and related issues. Our goal is to help increase understanding of archival practices in Hong Kong. Please attend and encourage your friends to do the same.
